Leeds Civic Trust Heritage at Risk 2010 (pdf 93kB)
In 1998, Leeds Civic Trust published a report on historic buildings in the City Centre which were at risk of deterioration through neglect, lack of use and lack of maintenance. Many of the buildings on that list have been restored but others remain in a poor if not parlous state.
English Heritage publish their Buildings at Risk Register annually, concentrating on Grade I and Grade II* listed buildings. In 2009 this was combined with other parts of the historic environment such as registered parks and gardens and scheduled ancient monuments under the title of Heritage at Risk. The 2010 Register expands the scope further by including conservation areas and the results of their survey of places of worship.
Leeds City Council also publishes a register of Buildings at Risk in Leeds which includes Grade II listed buildings. It was updated in 2009 and also incorporates a Strategy. It can be found here.
Leeds Civic Trust has updated its buildings at risk register as Heritage at Risk 2010 (pdf 93kB). It includes unlisted buildings and buildings outside the City Centre. By way of simplification, we have categorised the buildings on our register as either Urgent (that is, in immediate structural danger) or At Risk (that is, vulnerable through neglect and decay). Since the main aim of an Heritage at Risk Register is to get something done about it, we give the name of the owner where known. We would welcome corrections or additional information where this is not known. Finally, we give the reference number on the Images of England web site where more information can be found about the listed structures. We are adding to the Register more detailed information sheets which explain the importance of individual entries.
The Trust is grateful to its Affiliated Societies for their suggestions. The Register will be reviewed next in June 2011 and recommendations for additions or deletions will always be welcome.
