Leeds City Centre Transformed
A discussion document on a vision for the future of Leeds City Centre
How do we want Leeds City Centre to evolve over the next twenty years or so?
A radical rethink is needed to meet future challenges and opportunities. This view was endorsed by Leeds City Council in January 2008 when, with partners, it organised the Leeds City Centre Vision Conference. The 300 delegates debated the long-term future of the city centre, produced exciting ideas and seemingly
initiated a process of partnership working to deliver transformational change and improvement.
Progress since then has been disappointing, with few obvious initiatives which engage partners. In a bid to recapture and reinvigorate the spirit of radical discussion and transformational ambition initiated at the City Centre Vision Conference, Leeds Civic Trust is producing a series of short reports about the future shape and role of the city centre.
Following a brief look back at the changing city centre, our overview report, Leeds City Centre Transformed, provides a brief introduction to some of the issues which we believe are crucial to the long-term future role and success f othe city centre. These include:
- City centre living
- Shopping in the city centre
- Getting to and around the city centre
- Planning a pleasant and coherent city centre
- Greening the city centre
- An energy-efficient, eco-friendly city centre
Leeds Civic Trust has prepared this report to stimulate debate. It will be supplemented by expanded reports on each of the major topics raised. In the meantime, we would welcome any comments on these issues and ideas. Email us at
